KEEN was founded in 1999 by a group of individuals who thought that coordinating the many and varied outdoor learning opportunities in our region would be a good idea. We still think it is a good idea and though we will still coordinate our flagship events - Get Intimate with the Shrub-Steppe in the spring and Nature of Night in the fall - the new interim board is in the process of updating our materials, ramping up our fundraising, redirecting our efforts for the Natural History Center and just generally increasing our professionalism. More changes to come - we hope you will maintain your membership and stay tuned for great things to come!

KEEN has made a commitment to ensuring that our educational programs are inclusive and that we remain scientific and unbiased in our presentation of issues relating to the conservation and restoration of native habitats in our county. This is the essence of environmental education - it encourages inquiry and investigation and enables individuals to weigh various sides of an issue, but does not advocate a particular viewpoint or course of action. In other words, EE teaches people how to think, not what to think.

KEEN needs a new logo!

KEEN is in need of a new logo!

Our original logo has been around for 10 years and was never a great work of art - nor necessarily representative of our region or our work.

We've come up with a few new versions - see below - and would love your input. Please send an email to
keen@kittitasee.net with your vote.

If you are an aspiring artist and want to donate your time and talents to give KEEN a new logo, please be in touch!

Why Interim?

Early in 2008 it became apparent that many of the standing KEEN Board members were either leaving the board for personal reasons or leaving the state for employment opportunitites. The organization was in a serious state of transition and the incoming board members wanted some time to review goals, update materials and generally revive KEEN. The plan is to have the board members listed to the left be an "interim" board so that we could take some time to regroup, reenergize and renew KEEN. Then, this fall we will have a general membership meeting with a slate of "regular term" board members up for election from the membership. Thus, interim. If you are interested in putting your name forward for board membership, please send us an email at keen@kittitasee.net and we'll send you some application materials. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
